Weekend Entertainment Highlights

This has nothing to do with anything, but it looked cool.

Holiday weeks tend to suck the air out of the room. The worst (hands down) is Easter.

Many a brave promoter has scheduled a show during Easter weekend when there was nothing on the calendar, thinking they’d corner the market. Most end up regretting it.

I guess it’s hard to get away to catch a jam band on a Saturday night, when you’ve got to be up early the next morning to dress like The Joker for church and then watch the kids look for plastic eggs.

The weekend following Christmas isn’t much better. Schedules are disrupted. Family may be visiting. You may be out of town. And of course, New Year’s is only a few days away.

And that can seem expensive after dropping a couple hundred (thousand/) bucks over Christmas. So, the tendency is to cut back for a couple of days, sober up from the eggnog and wait just a bit.

So, the schedule through most of the state is kind of scant. No major touring acts in town. No theater performances. Mountain Stage doesn’t even come back to Charleston until the end of January.

It’s not dead, but it is slow.

The local bars seem to be on their regular schedule. Timothy Counts is doing jazz at The Empty Glass, but it’s hard to figure out much beyond that.

Sooo… if you’re looking for entertainment this weekend, you’re probably going to want to travel.

Some suggestions:

The Purple Fiddle in Thomas.

December 27: Buffalo Wabs and The Price Hill Hustle, 8:30 p.m.

Tickets $20.

December 29: The Plate Scrapers, 8 p.m. The Purple Fiddle, Thomas.

But… if you want to stick around the Charleston area, there is comedy –which is kind of like the redheaded stepchild of the area’s A&E scene.

December 28: The Jesters Comedy Hour, 7:30 p.m. Wandering Wind Meadery.

Tickets $10 at the door.

(Full disclosure: I have a soft spot for comedy shows, which are always underdogs compared to music and theater shows. Also, I kind of like the mead at Wandering Wind Meadery maybe because I’ve always thought I could’ve made a great Viking.)

Expect things to be a little slow over the next couple of weeks in Charleston (and virtually everywhere). This is normal.

Next week, the biggest name show inn Charleston is Buffalo Wabs and the Price Hill Hustle in Charleston, courtesy of FOOTMAD.
