Lost Highways -January 3, 2025

One of my lesser-known projects is Lost Highways, an Americana-ish radio program heard 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. on West Virginia Public Broadcasting.

New shows debut Saturday night and are replayed the following Friday.

I play a mix of popular Americana, some indie rock and some classic country or stuff that I think is part of the roots of what passes for Americana these days. I play a little Dylan, the occasional Bruce Springsteen song, but also Lyle Lovett, Hank Williams and Dolly Parton.

I seldom do theme shows, which tend to be too much work for too little payoff.

Tonight’s show is a rebroadcast, actually, from last year –and is a theme show about women in music. Here’s the playlist:

Jeff Ellis “On The Right Road Now” (Opening theme)

Neko Case “Favourite”

Molly Tuttle “Crooked Tree”

Lori McKenna “1988”

Alison Krauss/Union Station “I’ll Remember You in My Prayers”

Brandi Carlile “Murder in the City”

Amy Ray “Joy Train”

(Break)

The Highwomen “Highwomen”

Patty Griffin “Shine in a different Way”

Sierra Ferrell “The Bells of Every Chapel”

Patsy Cline “Walking After Midnight”

kd Lang “The Joker”

(Break)

Dar Williams “Iowa”

The Chicks “Goodbye Earl”

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings “Stranger to my Happiness”
